Opt Into Soft Mornings with Black Girl Burnout Podcast

You ever have someone measure your worth by how much you hustle or grind towards something? I swear it's the most belittling experience ever. First of all, words matter and neither one of them have definitions that I even want to associate with my being.

Hustle in its informal context is defined as obtaining by forceful action or persuasion and a grind is a difficult or boring activity that needs a lot of effort.

Ewwwwww!!!!! Who wants that?

Anyway, last holiday season, I had an uncomfortable conversation where I listened to a loved one boast about making $300k in 2021, purchasing a $100k car, and working 80 hours a week to do so. Yes, this conversation was supposed to motivate me. As if being the stay at home parent to a special needs child was somehow a walk in the park or left much room for the career I was building before I had my son. Anyway, in the end, the person told me I needed to work harder.

I was livid. Cause again, this is a loved one and I don't understand how they don't understand that no one should be working 60-80 hours a week.

A few weeks after the conversation, I remembered something my late grandmother used to tell me, how you start your day is how you end it. Well honey in that moment Operation Soft Mornings was birthed.

But, I’m a mom. So I had to head to Google cause what the firefly is a soft morning? I scrolled through a couple of articles before stumbling across the words “Opt into Soft Mornings”

I clicked the Spotify link and my love affair with Black Girl Burnout podcast was spawned. Hosted by Kelley Bonner the show is dedicated to aiding black women in managing the daily stress and avoiding burnout’s harmful effects. With over 15 years of therapy experience, Kelley delves into topics such as career burnout, relationship fatigue, and the impact of racism and sexism on burnout acceleration.

Black Girl Burnout releases three 15-minute episodes a week, which makes it easy for me to acquire (and use) the tools to combat burnout. The  bite-sized practices boost intuition and self-connection and the interview feel like mini coffee dates with friends. Kelley’s personal experience with burnout and recovery are often topics of discussion and proof the podcast is a labor of love, aimed at building a resilient community of women who thrive together with optimism, humor, and grace.
